Materials & Shingles · FAQ
Are architectural shingles worth the upgrade over three-tab in Illinois?
For most Illinois homes, yes. Architectural shingles cost $15 to $25 more per square installed but bring three measurable upgrades: 110 mph wind ratings versus 60 mph for three-tab, a 30-year limited warranty versus 20-year, and roughly twice the impact resistance.
The Mississippi and Missouri river corridor sees 60 mph gusts every storm season. Trill’s claim data shows architectural shingles failing about 40% less often than three-tab on the same exposure. The exception is a rental property or a roof slated for replacement before resale, where three-tab’s lower upfront cost wins out. For an owner-occupied home in Madison or Jersey County, the architectural premium typically pays back in one storm cycle.
