Is drip edge actually required by Illinois code?

Yes, since 2012 when Illinois adopted IRC Section R905.2.8.5. Drip edge is required at all eaves and rake edges on shingle roofs. Trill has worked roofs as recent as 2015 where the previous installer skipped it — usually saving $200 to $300 and creating a leak path that costs the homeowner $2,000+ in fascia and soffit repair a few years later.

The detail matters because shingle overhang alone does not consistently direct water away from the fascia. Drip edge (a small L-shaped metal flashing) tucks under the underlayment and over the fascia, creating a positive water break. On a re-roof Trill always replaces the drip edge whether the existing one looks intact or not — old drip edge sits in the wrong plane after a new underlayment goes down.
