How do I know if my drip edge has failed?

Three telltale signs, in order of severity. First, dark vertical streaks on the fascia or below the gutter — that’s water tracking down the fascia rather than draining into the gutter. Second, peeling paint or soft spots on the fascia, soffit, or rim board. Third, water dripping behind the gutter during rain, which you can see by walking the perimeter during a downpour.

Once any of these show up, the wood is wet and likely rotting at the eave. Drip edge replacement on a finished roof is invasive (we have to peel back the first course of shingles), but it’s far cheaper to do it as a standalone repair than to wait for the rot to reach the soffit framing. Call when you see the streaks, not after you see the rot.
