Are permits required for partial repairs or just full replacements?
Madison County’s threshold is generally $1,000 or roughly 100 square feet of replaced shingles. Below that, most jurisdictions allow repairs without a permit. Above it, the permit is required. Wind or hail emergency tarp jobs don’t require permits in Madison County.
Trill’s practice on partial repair jobs: we pull permits whenever the work crosses the threshold or whenever the structural decking gets touched. The added cost is small (typically $50 to $100) and the documentation matters at resale. If a repair is small enough that no permit is needed, we still note the work in the project file so there’s a record if you need it later. Always ask any contractor whether they’re pulling a permit; the answer tells you a lot.
