How should drip edge align with the gutter?
The drip edge metal should extend roughly 1/4 to 1/2 inch into the gutter trough, with the back leg tucked behind the gutter’s front lip. This positioning lets water shed from the shingle directly into the gutter rather than between the gutter and the fascia. Get this detail wrong and water tracks down the back of the gutter, rotting the fascia within 5 to 10 years.
Trill aligns drip edge and gutter on every install where both are being touched. On homes where only the roof is being replaced and existing gutters are staying, we adjust the gutter hangers slightly if needed to get the alignment right with the new drip edge plane. It’s a 15-minute detail that prevents a $4,000 fascia repair down the road.
