Insurance & Storm Damage · FAQ
How long do I have to file a hail claim in Illinois?
Most Illinois carriers allow up to 12 months from the date of loss, though some shorten this to 6 months for hail and wind specifically. Read your policy’s ‘duties after loss’ section for the exact timeline. The clock starts on the storm date, not the date you discover the damage.
Trill recommends filing within 30 days of the storm whenever possible. The carrier’s adjuster needs to see the damage in a condition that matches the claim date, which means before subsequent weather has weathered the impacts further or before subsequent storms can muddy attribution. Even if you’re not sure damage is claim-worthy, document with photos within 30 days. You can always decline to pursue the claim; you can’t retroactively create the documentation.
