Should I hire a public adjuster for a roof claim?

Sometimes — but not always. A public adjuster typically takes 10 to 15% of the claim payout, which on a $20,000 roof claim is $2,000 to $3,000. They earn their fee when the insurance company’s initial offer is substantially below the actual repair cost and they negotiate it up.

If you have a reputable roofing contractor (like Trill) doing the documentation and standing behind the scope, the public adjuster usually doesn’t move the number much. We’ve seen most cases where a public adjuster got involved AFTER the contractor’s scope was clear and the carrier was disputing line items — at that point the negotiation skill paid off. For routine claims with no disputes, the public adjuster fee comes out of your pocket without proportional benefit.
