Three categories of asphalt shingle, very different products:

3-tab – the old standard. Thin, single-layer, lower wind rating (typically 60 mph). Cheapest to install but the shortest lifespan. We don’t recommend 3-tab on new installs in the Riverbend because our wind events outpace what the shingle can handle. The only reason to use 3-tab today is matching an existing partial repair.

Architectural (dimensional, laminate) – the workhorse for Godfrey replacements. A premium shingle on a sloppy install fails sooner than a mid-range shingle properly installed. The shingle is maybe 60% of the system. The other 40% is what you don’t see:

Underlayment: Synthetic underlayment across the full deck, ice and water shield in the bottom 3-6 feet at the eaves and in all valleys. IL building code requires ice barrier where the average January temperature is below 25°F – that’s all of Madison County.

Flashing: Step flashing every shingle course at sidewalls, kick-out at the gutter line, counter-flashing at chimneys. This is where leaks start when an installer rushes.
