What’s a ‘square’ versus square footage?

One ‘square’ equals 100 square feet of roof surface. It’s the standard roofing industry unit because shingle bundles are sized in fractions of squares. A typical Madison County single-family home is 20 to 32 squares, meaning 2,000 to 3,200 square feet of roof.

The square-footage of your home (the heated living area) and the square-footage of your roof are different numbers. Roof area is always larger because of pitch (a 6/12 roof has 12% more surface area than the floor footprint) and overhangs. A 2,000 square foot home typically has a 2,200 to 2,500 square foot roof, or 22 to 25 squares. Trill measures actual roof area for every estimate; the calculator approximates from home size for budget planning.
