Should I replace skylights during a roof replacement?

If they’re over 12 years old, yes — and Trill recommends this on roughly 80% of homes that have skylights and are getting a full re-roof. Skylight life in Illinois weather is 15 to 25 years for the glazing and seals; older skylights become a known leak source within five years even on a brand-new roof.

The cost case is favorable: a skylight replacement done during a roof job runs $400 to $900 (depending on size and brand) versus $900 to $1,800 as a standalone job later (because of the shingle cut-back, flashing replacement, and trip charge). Trill defaults to recommending replacement on every skylight built before 2014. Newer skylights with intact glazing and no visible seal degradation typically get reused with new flashings.
