Materials & Shingles · FAQ
Does Illinois weather actually accelerate roof aging?
Yes, by roughly 10 to 15% versus a milder climate like the Pacific Northwest. The drivers are freeze-thaw cycles (Illinois averages 90+ per year), summer humidity, and the storm frequency. Each freeze-thaw cycle flexes the shingle slightly and works granules loose; each humid summer day adds moisture cycling at the underlayment level.
The compounding factor is hail. Even non-claim hail (smaller stones that don’t trigger an insurance event) wears granules over time. A roof in a hail-prone band like central Illinois ages faster than one in northern Illinois even with identical install quality. Trill’s age estimates on inspection reports account for the regional weather pattern; what looks like 18 years of wear in Madison County would look like 14 years of wear in Cook County.
