Who pays the wind/hail deductible in an insurance claim?
You do, by law in Illinois. The deductible (typically 1 to 2% of dwelling coverage value) comes out of your pocket; the carrier pays the claim amount minus the deductible. On a $20,000 claim with a 2% deductible on $300,000 of dwelling coverage ($6,000 deductible), the carrier pays $14,000 and you pay $6,000 to the roofer directly.
Some contractors (Trill is not one) advertise ‘we pay your deductible’ — that’s illegal in Illinois under 215 ILCS 5/155.49. It’s insurance fraud, and contractors who do this often inflate the claim amount to recover their fronted deductible. We’ve seen homeowners get audited and held responsible after using these contractors. Pay your deductible directly to the legitimate contractor; that’s the way the system is designed and it’s the only legal path.
