Insurance & Storm Damage · FAQ
Does soft hail (under 1 inch) cause real damage?
Yes, cumulatively. A single small-hail event causes minor granule loss that most insurance carriers won’t pay for. But three or four small-hail events over a few years compound into measurable damage that does qualify. Trill’s experience: the average Madison County roof takes 2 to 4 minor hail events per year, and roofs older than 10 years often show the cumulative wear pattern from those events.
That matters because some carriers will deny claims by characterizing damage as ‘cumulative weathering’ rather than ‘this event.’ Documentation matters: if you have photos from earlier in the year showing your roof’s condition before a major hail event, that’s the strongest evidence of new damage. Trill recommends an annual roof condition snapshot specifically for this reason.
