Materials & Shingles · FAQ
Can metal roofing work on low-slope sections?
Yes, standing-seam metal performs reliably down to 1/12 pitch, far lower than asphalt’s minimum. The vertical seam height (typically 1.5 to 2 inches on standing seam, versus the flat-lapped seam of corrugated metal) is what makes it watertight at low pitch.
This makes standing-seam particularly useful on Madison County porch roofs, dormer roofs, and additions that drop below 3/12 — the combinations that often defeat asphalt shingles. Trill installs metal as a sub-section on plenty of asphalt-shingle roofs to handle the one low-slope area. The metal-asphalt transition uses a step flashing detail we install on every transition. Cost premium is real (roughly 2x asphalt per square foot) but the lifespan triples.
