How do I know if my chimney is the leak source?

The classic chimney-leak signs: a ceiling stain that appears directly below the chimney, water stains on attic rafters near the chimney, or efflorescence (white powder) on the chimney’s interior brick face. If the stain pattern stops at the chimney’s plan-view boundary, the chimney itself is the path.

The harder cases are when chimney leaks track along the underlayment and emerge several feet from the chimney’s actual location. Trill’s diagnosis approach: water-test the chimney with a garden hose for 20 minutes, working from the lowest point upward, while a second technician watches the attic and ceiling below. Most chimney leaks reveal themselves within 5 to 10 minutes of testing the failed flashing section.
